I came across this album a couple weeks ago and fell in love. It’s a collection of modern folk musicians from Britain. Or the British Isles or something. Not completely sure, but it’s great. This has been one of my favorite songs from the album. As far as I can tell, it is a traditional tune. I know that it has been recorded by Tim O’Brien and was recorded by Bill Monroe back in the day but I haven’t found a definitive source to tell me who wrote it or what country it’s from.
This recording of the song is almost too “indie” sounding for me because of the girl’s voice but I still love it. The song is written in verses that tell a story. It’s a drawn out ballad about a girl who is waiting for her love who is in the army. She says that even if she had to wait another 7 years and her love came back married to someone else, she would be so happy that he was alive that she would love his new wife.
Maybe that’s a tad unrealistic, but I still think it’s a great song with a compelling story.
